Mojo Masterclass


The 5 days Masterclass is run in association with the Thomson Foundation "Journalism Now" e-Learning platform. The course will cover the following:
Day 1 Smartphone Photography
-Understanding the basics of your camera
-Manual controls: focus, exposure, white balance, shutter speed, iso.
-Advanced photography: slow shutter, time-lapse, portraiture, street photography
-Post production workflows
-Creating multi-media content with your images, photobooks, slideshows, videos.
Todays learning will be supported by several exercises and photoshoots including a guided photowalk around Cork with multi-award winning Irish photographer Brendan O'Sé.
Day 2 Audio
-Capturing great audio with your smartphone
-Hacks, tips and tricks for better sound
-Choosing the right microphone for your situation
-Audio interview techniques and ambient sound
-Editing multi track audio on your smartphone
-Creating and editing a podcast
-Combining photos and audio for multi-media projects
Todays learning will be supported by several audio recording and editing exercises under the supervision of your trainers.
Day 3 Video and Filmmaking
-Auto versus manual camera control
-Manual controls: focus, exposure, white balance, shutter speed, iso, image stabilisation
-The grammar of television and film
-Shooting sequences, the key to shortform mobile content
-Sound for video, hacks and tips
-Shooting interviews, vix-pops and stand-ups to camera
Todays learning will be supported by several exercises including your first real world shoot with an advance workshop and briefing session with award winning video journalist Seán Mac An tSithigh.
Day 4 Editing Video
-Simple editing Apps and techniques
-Advanced multi-track editing on your smartphone/tablet
>Creating a project and understanding formats and quality settings
>Adding and importing clips to your bin
>Adding, trimming, splitting, rearranging your shots in the edit
>Advanced audio features, split, detach, trim, audio level mixing and keyframing
>Adding graphics and subtitling
>Exporting your edit and reversioning for platforms
Todays learning will involve editing the story you filmed yesterday under the supervision of your trainers.
Day 5 Livestreaming (360º content and Drone cinematography*)
-The Do's and Don'ts of Livestreaming
-The gear you'll need
-Pro's and Con's of each live platform
-Single camera versus multi-camera livestreaming
-Moderating and managing trolls and abuse.
-Best practice for shooting 360º photos and video
-Audio for 360
-To be or not to be (in shot) That is the question
-simple post production on your smartphone
-Exploring advanced stitching and graphics
-Publishing and promoting your 360º content
-Drone cinematography the legal bit
-A look at the hardware options available
-Safety, risk management, liability and what to do when things go wrong
-The 8 shots you must master to create professional content
-Formats and editing considerations
NOTE: the 360º and Drone content is subject to time considerations and may not be feasible within the course timeframe.
